What is a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD)?
A Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) is a smart and tax-efficient way for individuals aged 70½ or older to donate directly from their IRA to a qualified charity. By doing so, QCDs help you give back while potentially lowering your taxable income. The amount donated through a QCD can count toward your required minimum distribution (RMD) for the year, which is especially beneficial for those aged 73 and older.
QCDs provide the perfect opportunity to support the causes you care about while maximizing your tax benefits. Donations made this way are excluded from your taxable income, helping you avoid paying taxes on that portion of your IRA withdrawal.
Key Benefits of QCDs:
To make a QCD, you must direct the funds from your IRA to a qualified charity, and the distribution must be made directly to the charity, not to you. It’s a simple, efficient way to give back while managing your retirement savings wisely.
